Writing Your Online Profile
There are several main ingredients to creating a great on-line dating
profile.
1. Start off with some great photos. They say a picture
is worth a thousand words so make sure you are sending out the best
possible message. Your profile should include one head shot and one
body shot. Make sure your photos are clear and in-focus. Do not use
photos that are too over exposed or too dark. You post recent photos
on your profile as you don’t want to give someone false advertising
regarding your appearance. I would suggest taking several photos in
different backgrounds and different angles and then get your friends
to pick their favorites. Make sure the background in your photo is not
too busy, dark or distracting. If the site does not call for it, make
sure your photos are not too provocative or suggestive. I recommend
using a digital camera as they come out clearer on the computer than
scanning a photo. (Trouble deciding on
a digital camera? Click here) You should be putting your best look
forward so go ahead and wear your most complimentary color and be sure
to play up your best feature. I would suggest that you don’t have
other people in your photos especially an ex girlfriend or boyfriend!
Additionally don’t try and crop them out of your photos because
for most it can be a turn off. So plunge ahead, let go of the past and
take some new pictures.
2. Pick a creative username that will stand out from the pack.
I suggest not using your real name for your online dating profile for
several reasons. First of all, you need to protect your privacy. Second,
I feel that your profile can get lost in the sea of never ending profiles
so choosing a stand out user name will draw more attention to your profile.
Will make you stand out from the crowd. This user name can describe
something about you such as your interests or hobbies (EndorphinMan),
highlight your best feature (BlueEyes), say something about your occupation
(Nightingale) or just be really funny and cute (ubetterkissme). You
should use something fun and creative but try to avoid being too boring,
bland, negative or just too desperate such as Niceguy, Monica1974, TrulyTrying,
or LonelyGuy. Someone will remember you if you chose a creative or silly
user name. I once saw a funny and entertaining profile with an off the
wall user name of pancakes and syrup. About a month later, I saw him
at a party. I walked up to him and said “Hey aren’t you
pancake and syrup”?! We both had a good laugh and it made for
a great ice breaker. For our first date, we met for brunch at the International
House of Pancakes. You just never know what will happen if you pick
out a stand out user name so choose wisely.
3. Writing great essays are essential for setting yourself
apart from the dating crowd. The key is to provide funny, creative,
and personal stories instead of using just adjectives to describe yourself.
You will need to prove it and there is no better or unique way than
providing your own personal stories! Write your essays much like you
would tell a story to one of your friends. Make sure to include things
that will set you apart from the competition much like an interesting
hobby, skill or a really neat vacation. If you need ideas for what will
make you different from the rest than check out your competition on-line
and write down what sets you apart from the other profiles. Be sure
your essays do not contain any grammar errors or miss-spelled words.
I would suggest writing your essays in Microsoft word or any software
program where you can run the spell check as well as save them for future
updates.
